Petition for RSPCA inquiry
As many of you will be aware, some of us are alarmed by the release into the wild of foxes which have been hand reared or rescued in towns and meet desperate ends when released in the countryside. They can only survive by killing poultry or lambs etc so are a real threat to our livelyhood. Nevertheless, most people I know are sickened when they have to shoot them. And those shot ARE the lucky ones- the rest die of slow starvation.
There are other issues where the RSPCA behaves above the law and not always in the best interests of the animals. We recently had a run-in with them over an issue on our farm, which had we followed the Freedom Food inspector's instuctions could have caused the death of hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of birds. We stood our ground and did get an apology but a less experienced producer might have been less willing to argue.
The attached petition asking for greater scrutiny of what this institution is doing. I hope some of you will sign it.

When we lived inteh Uk we had a probelm and I phoned the RSPCA helpline our lcoal rural office being closed and un manned. I got an office in a city somewhere and teh person answerring had no idea about rural life or animals their habits or how to deal with tehm! Had a horrible feeling it was a load of townie anilmalslovers who think nature is fluffy.. I was very dissalluisoined.

Thanks Grouse, I will go and have a look at the petition too. I had a bit of a blog the other day about a possible urban fox which has been lurking round here.

We have had urban foxes too (long story I may blog it). I have never respected the RSPCA's work or heir philosophy and think for various reasons they should not have the Royal word in their name. I will sign your petition and pass the word.

I know a couple of people who work for the SSPCA and I know how difficult their job is. They deal with so many animals both domestic and wild. Have also visited wildlife rescues that were amazing and others that I felt should have been closed. Should we even rescue wildlife at all - do we cause the rescued animals even more stress. I worked in a wildlife centre and saw arguments for both sides. Slow controlled release in a researched area for any rescued wildlife is vital - the biggest problem is well meaning individuals who do it on their own - then again some wildlife end up in captivity their whole life . . . A friend of mine rescues and rears baby bats - but they cannot be trained to look after themselves and so have to live in captivity . . . . is this right . . . the whole rescue thing is a massive question . . . .

Thanks for posting this, Grouse. Not sure if everyone read it but I had a blog over at CL about this - some friends experienced urban foxes being dumped (I've imported it over to my blog here if you're interested)... I know it's all a very emotive issue but it is plain WRONG to put animals from an urban environment into a rural one (for a vast array of reasons).

It is one of the curses of an overpopulated country with a vast number of people not having any idea about wild life and how it lives. They watch wildlife programs on the box, where we see nature red in tooth and claw, but they are unable to translate that into nature here. I read of a young fawn only a day or two ago, picked up by well-meaning but ignorant people.
With regard to urban foxes, it is a problem that will increase greatly and fast, now that hunting is banned. People do not realise that their natural predators no longer live here. The next thing will be some ghastly disease developing due to over crowding, maybe similar to TB in badgers.
Sorry - I could go on at great length about such things and the mis-guided activities of the RSPCA.
I shall sign your petition.

Absolutely you've hit the nail on the head.As a vet I've seen so many misguided attempts to save animals lives at all costs by some of the charities and I'm very disillusioned. I could really rant on about this but I don't want to get struck off. Can't do much 10 minute consult by 10 minute consult ..nearly got myself fired recently for my views re an animal's quality of life. Sometimes there is a fate worse than death.
Hence the law degree...see if I can get in on the ground floor and change things that way. Thanks for reminding me of the need for this as I struggle with juggling it all.

Good luck with that Patsy, animals need an advocate that isn't a totally daft sentimentalist.
I also posted a thread on the otherside using the same alias as on aol. :: smacks own wrists ::

ExJ must take the credit for starting this- it was her blog chez canard-vert that got me talking to her, An email from her sending an article in the Times by my neighbour Mathew Parish referred to the petition on (of all places)Tony Blair's website. All i did was go to the website and find it. It is reassuring that so many people here recognise the harm this charity is doing, by pulling at the heartstrings of those who know no better.

Nah, Grouse, YOU had the nous to find the petition (memo to self - read things properly, follow through to end!)....but I think that we all care deeply about animal welfare here and how wonderful to have an openminded discussion about it instead of the knee-jerk reactions that went up at the other place when I tried talking about it.

Have signed the petition, always had my doubts about the RSPCA's motives, well done to Patsy, not enough of being cruel to be kind these days, that's now flipped round, thankfully our vets are realists and know when the end has come
I've just got some new bantams, so if any of those urban foxes come round here, they'll be for it

I read your blog when you wrote it Jane and it did think it was a rather absurd thing to do, I lived in Eltham many years ago and not long after they did a program on the urban fox there, yes they did turn up on bin night but animals of all shapes and sizes do that whereever you live.
Will look into the link Grouse as I if I was to be honest I haven't a clue what they get up to but would like to think they knew what they were doing and were accountable for it, thankyou.

Will take a look. Am not nearly as well-informed as many of you on here , but I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments.
