In favour of offering a comprehensive listing of local activities
which would be fairly extensive we offer a sample to give a flavour
of what's around.
The region offers an abundance of hill walking for exercise, with
the added bonus of spectacular views. For the more energetic Ben
Lawers is only 20 mins drive away and with a summit of 3983ft offers
a very rewarding stroll up from the nature centre car park. Ben
More is equally close and the stunning Glen Coe area with its many
challenging peaks is under 40 mins drive away towards Fort William.
Also there are many tracks popular with Cyclists including a section
of the National Cycle Network Sustrans
(Route 7) which runs less than 1/2 a mile from Wester Lix. The route
runs past Wester Lix and takes the former railway track through
Glen Ogle towards Stathyre and Callander (and on to Glasgow if you
get carried away !) Not got a bike ? - no problem, as you can hire
mountain bikes from the local outdoor centre.
Water Sports are available on Loch Tay and Loch Earn. These include
Dinghy Sailing, Windsurfing, Water Skiing, Hydroboarding, Parasending,
Canyoning...whilst Canoeing and Kayaking can be found in several
locations for an hour, a day, or even overnight trips. Also within
easy reach are Gorge walks and abseiling. In the winter months cross
country or downhill Skiing and snowboarding are not too far away.
Horse riding can be found a few miles outside Killin at the Loch
Tay Equestrian Centre.
If this all sounds too much and relaxation is your quest then Golf
Courses can be found at Killin, Loch Lommond, or various locations
within easy reach. Fishing can be found on the nearby Lochs with
the relative permits available from various local shops.
Finally the area offers many traditional tourist attractions such
as the Blair Drummond Safari Park just outside Stirling, the Rob
Roy & Trossachs Visitor Centre, many Whiskey Distilleries, a
Steam Boat trip on Loch Katrine, plus many sites of historic interest
including the legendary castles.
Alternatively an hours drive will take you shopping in Stirling,
a visit to the coastal town of Oban, the stunning scenery of Glen
Coe, or slightly further is Fort William with its many shops, ,
and also the start of a main line Steam Train to the coastal port
of Mallaig (summer season only). Fort William is also the nearest
town to Ben Nevis, Scotland highest munro (and the UK's highest
peak) If walking such hieghts is not your preference then try the
'Gondola' cable car ride to the north side of the munro.
Finaly both Edinburgh and Glasgow are about 1 1/2 hours drive away.
Further details can be found at the local and regional Tourist
boards. The regional board for our area is the "Argyll,
the Isles, Loch Lommond, Stirling & Trossachs Tourist
Board" which is represented by many local centres:
